Dr. Alice Kay Locklear is a visionary leader in social work and education, whose dedication to empowering communities has redefined the field. As a Professor and Assistant Department Chair of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Dr. Locklear has spent decades shaping the next generation of social workers with a commitment to cultural competence, trauma-informed practice, and inclusive leadership.
A proud member of the Lumbee Tribe, Dr. Locklear’s groundbreaking work reflects a deep focus on serving Indigenous peoples and marginalized communities. Her pioneering efforts as the first Native American woman in her department to earn a Ph.D have opened doors for underrepresented voices in academia and beyond. Through innovative teaching methods and tireless advocacy, she has transformed challenges into opportunities for growth, both for her students and the communities they serve.
Dr. Locklear’s influence extends far beyond the classroom. As Region V Representative for the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), she contributes to shaping policies and practices that advance equity and inclusion in social work nationwide. Recognized for her exceptional contributions, she was twice named Woman of the Month by P.O.W.E.R., further cementing her status as a trailblazer in the field.
